Championing Land Rights, Cultural Heritage, and Equitable Representation
Through ILEPA’s capacity building, and informed lobbying and advocacy strategies have contributed to positive outcomes in number of land rights related claims among communities we work with.
Maji moto group ranch has realized restoration of at least 2,000 acres of communal lands which were previously grabbed. This included communal water points, hospital & school grounds and joint communal lands hosting joint enterprise for community revenue streams.
Maasai Mau Trustlands Forest (MMTF) for which ILEPA supported a video documentary on its state of conservation and community claims has also been reclaimed. In partnership with other stakeholders, these efforts have borne fruits as illegal settlers have been removed from the forest and forest restoration & conservation initiatives enhanced.
ILEPA’s enhanced & growing recognition and legitimacy as a Social Actor across levels resulting in expanded presence in institution of strategic relevance to IPs rights, the vision and mission of ILEPA – such as sitting in the Board of the Rights and Resources Institute (RRI), Steering Committee member to The Community Land Rights and Conservation Finance Initiative (“CLARIFI”)
ILEPA was nominated under the Diversity and Inclusion Awards Recognition (DIAR) as one of the four finalist best NGOs in the promotion of human rights in 2020.
Nationally, ILEPA was nominated by the leadership of the Maa nation (10 Counties with Maa Speaking groups) in Kenya to head the technical drafting team of the Maa nation with respect to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) in Feb. 2020.
ILEPA is a member, Indigenous Peoples Major Group advancing Indigenous Peoples’ interests within the UN 2030 Development Agenda on SDGs;
Active Member, International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change, on issues related to climate change under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Member of the Community Land Action Now (CLAN) – the largest network of communities and community-support organizations focused on community land rights in Kenya. It works towards empowering communities to secure community lands and other natural resources for sustainable local livelihoods.
Member, of the International Land Coalition Africa (ILC Africa), which focuses on promoting secure and equitable access to land and natural resources for individuals and communities living on and from the land.
ILEPA was the lead agency helping Kenya’s State department of Environment and Forestry to develop National Guidelines for Stakeholder Engagement and Guidelines for Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) to be applied in the context of Indigenous Peoples. UNDP provided the resources for development of the FPIC Guidelines.
Has also, helped the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA) develop FPIC guidelines to be applied in the context of Community Based Conservancies in Kenya.
Is now in advanced stages of developing human rights protocols and FPIC Guidelines for Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association (MMWCA) to be applied in the context of the Maasai Mara conservation landscape.
Part of the Consultancy group that helped develop Kenya’s approach to Safeguards, the safeguards Information System (SIS) for REDD+, including an Indigenous Peoples Action Plan.
ILEPA’s consistent nomination to represent IPs in the drafting of the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) to contribute to the chapter on Indigenous knowledge.
ILEPA’s nomination as member of the national Technical Advisory committee to the Locally Led Climate Actions (FLLoCCA) in Kenya.
through publication of popular versions of literature materials of critical value & interest to IPs & relevant stakeholders, networks and platforms including Case studies, legislations, programmes, and mechanisms, growing repertoire of timeless user-friendly and accessible literature materials on topical issues relevant to IPs and grassroot non-state actors, related to land and natural resources, human rights & governance, citizen participation and representation, environmental conservation, sustainable development, and social justice primarily targeted at youth, women pastoralists in Narok County.

Strengthened citizen participation in governance, through County Watchdog on Budget making and monitoring Processes delivered through dialogue forums, trainings, and community outreaches, contributing towards improving accountability within government and market actors.
Increased emergence and application of instruments of citizen engagement in policy formulation, programmes design, implementation, and access to benefits such as stakeholder engagement and Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) guidelines for which ILEPA has played a critical role.
