Capacity Building - Empowering communities with skills for sustainable growth and self-reliance

Localizing and giving meaning to relevant SDGs & Strengthening linkages with relevant county, national, regional, and international strategies, and frameworks: Overall, the 17 SDGs and associated indicators in real terms reflect everyday livelihoods aspirations of communities. The slogan ‘Living No One Behind (if not Putting those behind first) reveals outcomes of historically flowed development pathways that have yielded inequality and entrenched poverty. Towards the SDGs aspirations, ILEPA has implemented a project dubbed; ‘The Indigenous Navigator’. Which aspires to generate data on SDGs by Indigenous Peoples for Indigenous Peoples. The project entails the community generated their own data on SDGs of their immediate interest and prioritizing their needs based on the generated list. Through this project ILEPA has constructed a Maternity, a Clinic and several water pans as identified by the community. As a result, ILEPA’s has been recognized and feted as a leading NGO in Kenya in efforts towards localization of SDGs. In addition, ILEPA now occupies a distinct space within Kenya CSOs SDGs forum, as coordinator of activities under goal 13 of the SDGs. ILEPA’s work on localizing SDGs has been referenced in Kenya’s Voluntary Report on SDGs submitted to the High-Level Political Forum on SDGs. ILEPA has also produced a popular version translation of SDGs in the Maa language.

Enhancing Resilience during/after COVID Pandemic

ILEPA initiated and availed a modest back-to-school scholarship on a pilot basis targeted at affected girls, gifted in education, needy and with a self determination to continue with learning.

ILEPA also availed seed capital towards support of Indigenous livelihoods and social enterprises for economic recovery to the most impacted Women-led households to cushion against the economic strain and inspire hope for the life and education. An improved Goats stocking programme was rolled-out.

Training for diversified skills on Sewing and design of re-usable masks to indigenous women group and dropout girls not eager to resume schooling. Sewing Machines and initial supplies for the trade were supplied

Conservation of the Maasai Mara Landscape:

The project aims to optimize strategic partnership to achieve, maintain, enhance and sustain biodiversity conservation and improve livelihoods in the Maasai Mara Landscape by systematically collaborating with the private sector, conservancies, sub-county and county levels to respond to the gaps identified by the project.
Partner: The Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association (MMWCA) is an umbrella body for conservancies in the Mara landscape, currently with 22 member conservancies at different stages of development.

COMMUNTY LAND ACTION NOW!

Is an informal Network of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, Civil Society Organization and Community-Based Organization. ILEPA is a partner organization and together we work with Pastoral communities in Narok and Nakuru County to share knowledge and build solidarity for tackling multiple lands and Natural resources-related issues, particularly the formalization of community land rights.
Funded by Tenure Land Facility (TF), the projects’ goal is to support indigenous communities in securing their recognized Land and naturals resources rights through community-driven land registration and sustainable resource management.

PELKAP- Pastoralist Enhanced, Livelihood and Knowledge Advocacy Project

The Pastoralists’ Enhanced Livelihoods, Knowledge, and Advocacy Project (PELKAP) aims to enhance the resilience of pastoral livelihoods by improving access to livestock feeds, water, support services, and markets while fostering a responsive policy environment and knowledge generation. Implemented by Indigenous Livelihoods Enhancement Partners (ILEPA), the project focuses on four wards in Narok County: Maasai Mara, Maji Moto Naroosura, Mosiro, and Suswa.
Funded by the Home Planet Fund and supported by the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI), its activities include pasture production, capacity building on cooperatives, livestock breed improvement, and promoting indigenous knowledge systems to address climate resilience and sustainable development.
